Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a highly allergenic preservative. It can be very difficult to avoid formaldehyde in skin care products, as it does not always appear on the list of ingredients. Why?

If formaldehyde is used as a preservative, formaldehyde has to appear on the list of ingredients. The problem is that a number of preservatives with names that don’t refer to formaldehyde are actually able to form formaldehyde when included as ingredients in a cream. These are called formaldehyde donors. A chemical reaction results in the original preservative that releases formaldehyde to the product.

This creates many challenges for formaldehyde allergy sufferers and for those who want to prevent allergies. If you only have a product’s list of ingredients as your guide, it is impossible to see if there is formaldehyde contained in the product or not.

Fortunately, there is a solution you can count on. Choose products carrying the AllergyCertified logo or Asthma Allergy Nordic Label, because they do not contain formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors. That’s why you will not find them in any Derma products.
