How do dyes appear on the list of product ingredients?

Dyes are indicated with codes known as CI numbers. For example CI 17200 or CI 47005.

Some substances can have several different functions. If a substance is identified by name instead of the CI number, then it is not used as a dye but rather as an ingredient with the exact same name. For example, titanium dioxide is used as a colouring agent, but it can also act as UV filters in sun screen. In sun screen it’s an ingredient with an important function. When e.g. titaniumdioxid is used as a dye it has the CI number CI 77891 in the ingredients list, but when it is used as a UV filter it has the name titaniumdioxid in the ingredientslist.
